Abstract
We describe a system for pediatric injury-related surveillance using clinical narratives within electronic health records (EHRs). We created a scalable case identification software module named \"Dr. T\" (Document Reviewing Tool) which uses a combination of natural language processing (NLP) methods to search the EHR for injury cases. Dr. T has been used successfully by physicians with different levels of computer skill for injury prevention, research, and advocacy. Dissemination of this surveillance concept will help to answer the call for timely data in the field of pediatric injury prevention.
